About Libby Martina
I am a Leicester-based artist known for creating colourful, expressive work with a focus on the human form.
I love experimenting with a range of materials, creating sumptuous layers with inks, watercolours, pastels and wax, and exploring different textures and mark-making in vibrant acrylics.
With my background as a graphic designer, I bring an intuitive understanding of composition and colour theory to my work as an artist. I instinctively draw on key design principles such as balance, movement and space to create visually harmonious imagery.
My work unfolds quickly and fluidly. I find that ink drips and rough edges add to the beauty and energy of the finished piece. I often build multiple layers of imagery and colour, sometimes the whole piece can change several times over a short session, before I scrape back some areas to reveal hints of the story below.
I find inspiration in German Expressionism and modern abstract landscapes. I am drawn to placing the figure in a natural setting, often including themes of water or mark making in a way that evokes a wet atmospheric quality. I enjoy drawing my audience in, encouraging them to look closer and inviting them to explore the layers and details in order to see what is there.
